HVAC Construction
TierPoint, a data storage center in Chicago, saw demand increase drastically in 2020. As a result, they needed to increase capacity to cool down their servers and provide cooling for expansion within their facility. The project required a 500-ton fluid cooler, the largest HVAC unit of its kind to be installed in North America. The record-breaking cooler is 626” in length, 100” in height, and 118” in width, with a shipping weight of 33,317 lbs and an operating weight of 38,058 lbs.
Ortiz Contracting acted as the general contractor, with months of careful planning to execute the project with turnkey precision. Ortiz organized and managed the steel contractor, insulator, and engineers, the crane company, the rigging of equipment, and the trucking and delivery of the fluid cooler. The project required a 200-ton crane to lift the massive cooler to the roof. Our team self-performed the fluid cooler installation, as well as the fabrication and installation of approximately 200’ of 8” carbon steel piping—a 30% glycol system.
